GALAXY A7 (2018) VS HUAWEI Y9 (2019): HEAD TO HEAD COMPARISON
Looking to get a new smartphone this year? Here are two great mid-range smartphones to consider before making your next purchase. We bring you a comparison between the Huawei Y9 (2019) and the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018). Both devices were released in October of 2018 making them both relatively new with a number of similar specifications. Here are a few pointers that will have you thinking.

DESIGN

Samsung Galaxy A7 Vs Huawei Y9 Both phones are beautifully designed with glass mostly. The Huawei Y9 (2019) has a glass front, a sleek polycarbonate back that gives it a stylish design making it look very attractive and elegant. The Huawei Y9 unlike most of their previous mid-range phones is finely crafted with a 3D arc design which gives it a solid grip and overall great feel when holding it. It comes in 3 unique sets of colors: the Midnight Black, Sapphire Blue and Aurora Purple. Similarly, the Galaxy A7 features a glass back and front, it has aluminum on the sides with metallic buttons giving it a classy look and feel. The A7 has an unusually placed fingerprint sensor on the side of the phone making for comfortable handling and ease of use. The phone comes in more colors than the Y9 giving you a good choice of color. It is available in black, blue, pink and gold. Overall both devices look classy and elegant. Samsung Galaxy A7 Design

DISPLAY

Huawei Y9 Display The Huawei Y9 2019 features a large 6.5-inch FHD display with a 2340 x 1080 resolution and a 396PPI pixel density which gives it a very crisp and vibrant display. The Huawei Y9 has a relatively larger screen than the 6.0” display found on the Galaxy A7. Samsung is known for its highly saturated screens and the A7 is no exception. It features a 1080 x 2220px full HD Super AMOLED display with a stunning 441 pixel density that produces sharp contrast and dynamic color for a much brighter and colorful viewing experience. Overall both devices provide for a great viewing experience with good viewing angles too. The galaxy has the brighter and colorful screen. However, the larger 6.5” screen on the Huawei Y9 provides for exception viewing especially when it comes to watching videos.

CAMERA

Samsung Galaxy A7 Camera The Galaxy A7 captures your attention with its triple back cameras. The triple-camera system on the rear of the phone is a first from Samsung, there’s a primary 24MP sensor camera, a 5MP depth sensor for better portrait mode pictures and an 8MP sensor for wide-angle shots. This is quite important as you no longer have to worry about cropping out what you would really want to keep in the frame. Whether you’re shooting expansive landscapes or group photos, you now have more room to work with. The A7 also packs a powerful 24MP front facing camera packed with modes from beauty mode and AR emoji’s that bring quality and fun to selfies.

Huawei Y9 Camera
On the other hand, the Huawei comes packed with a dual front facing camera made up of a 16 MP + 2 MP camera and dual rear cameras composed of a 13-megapixel f/1.8 snapper and 2-megapixel f/2.4 rear sensor. Both cameras capture a good sense of detail even in low light situations. The Y9 uses an AI camera that allows it to intelligently recognize scenes and is trained to see more than 500 scene types to provide real-time optimization. The camera can basically see what kind of photos you are trying to take, it recognizes people, food, plants, animals and therefore optimizes the camera settings to get the best picture possible. Overall, both phones deliver crisp and quality pictures but it is Samsung’s triple camera that captures the better pictures especially in low light situations producing the more vibrant and detailed pictures as seen below.

PERFORMANCE & STORAGE

The Huawei Y9 (2019) comes in two variants based on storage space and memory. The 4GB RAM model packs 64GB of internal storage while the 6GB RAM model comes with 128GB of internal storage. In addition, both phones give the user an option to expand storage through an SD card slot. The Y9 comes equipped with Huawei’s own processor, the Kirin 710 octa-core chipset. The Kirin 710 has proven to be a reliable and efficient processor on previous Huawei phones such as the “Honor” series. As a result, one can expect tasks such as file transfers, video streaming, multi-tasking and social media browsing to run smoothly on the Y9 though larger apps such as graphic intensive games may require the user to reduce graphic settings in order to run smoothly. The Galaxy A7 similarly comes in two variants: one with 4GB of RAM & 64GB of storage and the other with 6GB of RAM & 128GB of storage. It is also powered by an 8 core processor, The A7 comes packing the Samsung Exynos 7885 octa-core processor which offers similar performance to that of the Kirin 710 found in the Y9. A benchmark run by Antutu to determine processor speed and GPU performance shows that the Huawei Y9 obtained a higher 138 score than the 116 scored by the Galaxy A7.

BATTERY & SOFTWARE

The Galaxy A7 (2018) has a relatively large 3,300mAh battery capacity. This should be able to keep the phone going for a full day of normal use and if you’re careful with your screen brightness, you could even get a day and a half out of this phone by putting light to moderate use. On the other hand, Huawei takes an extra mile in battery performance by packing the Y9 (2019) with an even larger 4,000mAh battery. According to Huawei, the battery is big enough to offer 52 hours of voice calling or 9 hours of gameplay and media playback on a single charge. The Huawei Y9s battery is exceptional putting into consideration the large 6.5” display on it which drastically increases battery consumption. The Y9 has one of the best batteries on the market and its only downside is that it does not include fast charging, whereas the Galaxy A7 does.

Both the Huawei Y9 and Galaxy A7 were released in October of 2018 hence, they come stocked with the same android version. They both run on Android 8 Oreo, however, both phone manufacturers have custom user interfaces placed over the android software. The Galaxy A7’s runs on Samsung’s “Experience 9.0 UI” on top of android 8.0 Oreo. This UI can be found in rest of the recent A-series phones and the new galaxy S9 and Note9 smartphones. The UI comes with various new features such as; a new and improved keyboard with more emojis, a color lens feature that allows you to stare at your phone for many hours without any adverse effects and many more.

The Y9 operates on the EMUI 8.2 UI which is known for its level of customization. It gives you the permission to set up your own photo as a background, put apps in the dedicated drawer, navigate using the physical or virtual keys etc. It also includes handy features such as allowing the camera to detect various scenes, PC mode that brings the smartphone experience to a larger screen by allowing you to connect your phone to an external monitor using a USB Type-C to HDMI cable enabling you use your Huawei phone as though it was a PC.

CONCLUSION

When it comes to selecting a smartphone, many things are taken into consideration. Both the Huawei Y9 (2019) and Galaxy A7 (2018) present great specs and features. Therefore, choosing one may come down to user preference. Samsung is a well-known brand and that in itself may influence people to go with the Galaxy A7, the phone also captures your attention with its triple lens camera and the results are nothing short of amazing. The Huawei on the other hand provides for exceptional value, if you are looking for a high end phone on a decent budget, then the Huawei may be the better option for you. Coming at a cost of only K3,200.00 compared to the costlier K4,520.00 price tag on the A7, the Y9 seems like an absolute steal. Not forgetting its larger 6.5” display that will surely turn heads. All in all, both phones are great options to consider purchasing in this new year. Which one do you fancy?
