SAMSUNG GALAXY A30 VS SAMSUNG GALAXY A50
If at all you are looking to buy a new phone this year, Samsung has released two great phones that can meet your highest consideration. Both are great phones and are great value for your money. Samsung announced the release of the Samsung Galaxy A30 and the Galaxy A50 in February of 2019 and later released both mobile phones in March 2019.
DESIGN AND DISPLAY
In terms of design, both the Galaxy A50 and A30 are well-made and feature an elegant look. They are stylishly thin, they feature a slightly curved back that lends itself to a very comfortable in-hand feel and have minimal bezels around the screen. The back of both phones also reflect light transforming it in all sorts of interesting patterns and adding further style points. If you take a closer look, you will notice that the back of these two phones is not actually glass though it does appear like it but it is instead plastic.
In the case of dimensions, the A50 is very similar to the A30 in that it has exactly the same screen. Both devices come equipped with the same 6.4-inch screen featuring a resolution of 1080 x 2340-pixel Super AMOLED Infinity-U display protected with Gorilla Glass display with the same thickness of 7.7mm. Despite both phones having the same type of screens, the A30's seems to be of lower quality with just a little margin. This can be noticed due to less vibrant colors and a noticeably dimmer screen when brightness on both phones is turned to the maximum.
SECURITY & FINGERPRINT SCANNER
One of the major highly noticeable differences between the Galaxy A50 and the A30 is the fingerprint scanner. The A50 comes equipped with an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner embedded under the screen while, the A30 features a native or rather traditional fingerprint scanner placed on the back of the phone.
In addition, there are definitely benefits to having the fingerprint scanner on the front as compared to having it on the back of the phone. Without digging deep into the fingerprint scanner placement, the front is a much more natural position and there is no need for a user to lift up their phone in order to unlock it.
USER INTERFACE & SOFTWARE
Both the A50 and the A30 are powered by Samsung’s latest One UI version 1.1 based on top of Android 9 (Pie). The user interface (UI) has the same look and feel as that of the Galaxy S10 series. It comes with settings that are easier to navigate and a few useful new features like Night mode that turns white backdrops in the interface to black for a more comfortable use experience at night and little convenient features such as menus that are easily accessible with a single hand.
As a user, you also get the option to switch to the gesture-based navigation that can be used in place of the traditional three-button Android navigation system. When making use of the gesture based system as a user, you can swipe up from the bottom to go to the Home screen, swipe up and hold to see previously run and currently running applications for multitasking purposes and swipe sideways from the edge of the screen to go back to the previous screen.
By default, both devices come with Bixby Assistant but do not have a dedicated physical key. In term of accessibility, Bixby can either be invoked by either going to the Bixby home screen panel or by long-pressing the power button though this option has to be enabled in the settings first.
CAMERA
The camera specs for the Samsung A50 are as impressive as the come. Both phone are equipped with a 16MP front facing cameras for taking high quality selfie shots.
As for the rear cameras, the Galaxy A50 comes with a 25MP main camera with an f/1.7 aperture accompanied by a 5MP f/2.2 depth sensor camera to support Live Focus portraits and an 8MP f/2.2 ultra-wide lens with a considerable 123 degrees field of view comparable to that of the Galaxy S10 ultra-wide camera. While technically you get a triple lens camera system on the A50 and a dual camera lens system on the A30, there is not that much of a difference in terms of actual camera performance and quality between these phones.
On the other hand, the Galaxy A30 has slightly lower resolution and as a user, you will not get the depth camera sensor. But regardless, you will still have the Live Focus “portrait” mode from the Rear Cameras that feature a 16MP camera with an aperture of f/1.7 and a 5MP camera with an aperture of f/2.2 ultra-wide.
PROCESSOR, PERFORMANCE AND MEMORY
Both the A50 and the A30 are powered by the Octa-Core Samsung-made Exynos chips, but there is a tangible difference in the actual performance. The Galaxy A50 comes with the Exynos 7 Octa 9610 and 4GB of RAM, while the Galaxy A30 comes with the Exynos 7 Octa 7904 with 4GB of RAM which is approximately about 50% inferior to the Exynos 7 Octa 9610 as far as performance and efficiency goes.
On the Galaxy A50, the graphics performance is also twice better as compare to that on the Galaxy A30 hence, if gaming your concern then you'll definitely have to opt for the Galaxy A50.
The other significant difference between these two phones is the amount of built-in storage. The Galaxy A50 has 128GB of on-board storage, while the Galaxy A30 has a 64GB of built-in storage. Never the less, a 128GB on the Galaxy A50 and a 64GB on the A30 is not all you can get. Should the factory provided storage prove to be inadequate for your use, you can go ahead and expand the storage by the use of a MicroSD as MicroSD expansion is supported on both the Galaxy A30 & A50.
PRICING
With just a few features described in brief above, the Galaxy A50 (2019) and the Galaxy A30(2019) actually differ a great deal in terms of price. The Galaxy A50 as of this writing is costing K4,385.00 while the Galaxy A30 costs K3,215.00.
CONCLUSION
When it comes to making a decision on which phone is better to buy between the two, it all comes down to user preference and how you intend to use the phone, the Galaxy A50 (2019) comes with a great camera with accompanied by a triple lens system and offers better processing power for playing video games and a much faster response time. So unless you care deeply about gaming, performance, pixel quality and built-in storage, the A30 is a budget device that will give you a taste of both worlds in terms of stable performance, great user experience and most importantly, your money's worth.
